The newest "Ephemeral Films" files are clearly derived from 4:3 sources - but they're encoded as 16:9 video files. This pillar-boxes the image. The videos are 640 X 360, with a usable image area of 490 X 360. What's the point? They are barely useful for re-purposing at this size. Other videos at archive.org are 640 X 480 or greater full frame videos.

Casey -- we're testing our new film scanner, so please regard everything you see for the moment as experimental.

The reason we are pillarboxing is to offer a format with which people can easily edit. These days, most people are editing in 16:9, and if they want to work in 4:3 they can reproportion the video. I agree with you that the low-res files are kind of dumb, and I've proposed that we offer higher-res videos in the player and h.264 formats. Please stay tuned.
